History
The Polymer Science and Engineering major was established in 2001, derived from the polymer program of the Applied Chemistry major in the School of Chemistry and Materials of Nanchang University. It was rated as the featured major of Jiangxi provincial higher education system in 2010 and was approved as the national first-class undergraduate major construction site in 2021. It is an important part of the construction of Nanchang University's world-class discipline "Materials Science and Engineering". The affiliated School of Physics and Materials Science has the first level authorization program for master's and doctoral degree, as well as a postdoctoral mobile station in Materials Science and Engineering. Moreover, the discipline of Materials Science has entered the top 1% of ESI world rankings. Over 1000 undergraduates are well-trained for the country since the first enrollment of students in 2004.
Faculty
There are currently 16 members of full-time faculty, including 5 professors, 6 associate professors, and 5 lecturers. Among them, there are 5 doctoral supervisors and 10 master's supervisors. 80% of the faculty have a doctoral degree, 50% have more than one year of overseas study experience, and 75% have an engineering background.
Training Objective
The training objective of this major is to cultivate talented senior engineering technicians with excellent ideological and moral qualities, humanistic literacy, legal and environmental awareness, innovative thinking, team spirit, international perspective and management ability, mastery of basic knowledge of mathematics and natural sciences, solid professional knowledge and skills in polymer science and engineering, and the ability to engage in scientific research, technological development, and engineering applications related to polymers. Thus, to cultivate the successor of socialist cause with featuring an all-round development in morality, intelligence, physique and art.
Professional direction and features
The orientation of this major is "Act locally, For the country, Consolidate the foundation, and Focus on innovation", and the cultivation policy is "Solid foundation, Wide application, Emphasize practice, and Value innovation". With the cultivation of innovation ability as the core, based on the inherent relationship between the four basic elements of materials: “composition and structure, synthesis and processing, performance and usability, and interrelationships among these elements”, a systematic modular theoretical teaching system and an integrated layered practical teaching are adopted. By further constructing a collaborative education mechanism that integrates industry, academia, and research, as well as science and education, we aim to transform teaching from imparting knowledge to cultivating comprehensive qualities and innovative abilities in terms of teaching system, teaching mode, and teaching methods to cultivate students' basic and engineering practical abilities in polymers. Graduates of this major will have a strict engineering training background, strong hands-on skills, strong innovation ability and adaptability, and are competent for scientific research, engineering design, technological research and development, production, and business management related to polymer materials in industries such as new materials, new energy, biopharmaceuticals, petrochemical, automotive, aerospace, building materials, home appliances, etc.
