  1. Historical Background:

The Major of Materials Science and Engineering was established in 1993 under the guidance of the academician, Pan Jiluan, the former president of Nanchang University. By supporting on the construction of the national key discipline "Materials Physics and Chemistry", the Material Science and Engineering discipline was selected as a national "First-Class Discipline" in 2017 and was included into the two key construction disciplines at the ministerial and provincial levels.

  1. Teaching and Research:

Materials Science and Engineering discipline is the first-level discipline which can award the doctoral degree and master degree. It also has the right to grant masters degree in "Materials Physics and Chemistry" and engineering master's degree in "Materials Engineering". There is a post-doctoral station of "Materials Science and Engineering". Additionally, there are several national research platforms and provincial laboratories, including the "National Engineering Technology Research Center of Silicon-based LED", the "MOCVD Equipment and Technology Collaborative Innovation Center" co-constructed by the Chinese Ministry of Education and Jiangxi Province, the "Engineering Research Center of Luminescent Materials and Devices" of the ministry of education, the provincial "Key Laboratory of High-Performance Precision Forming", the provincial "Engineering Laboratory of Advanced Functional Thin Film Materials", the provincial "Engineering Research Center of Solar Photovoltaic Technology", the provincial "Key Laboratory of Luminescent Materials", the provincial "Engineering Technology Research Center of Semiconductor Luminescent Materials" and the "Key Laboratory of Two-dimensional Functional Materials and Devices". In 2008, it was recognized as a distinctive major among Jiangxi universities. In 2017, the materials science and engineering undergraduate major was ranked first in the comprehensive evaluation of all Jiangxi universities, and successfully passed the China Engineering Education Professional Certification which became one of the first twenty materials science and engineering majors to be accredited in China. Within this year, this discipline entered the top 1% in the ESI ranking. In 2019, it was selected as a first-class major in Jiangxi Province and passed the reevaluation of the China Engineering Education Professional Certification. This major was designated as a national first-class undergraduate major in 2020 and was rated as a five-star undergraduate major in Jiangxi Province in 2022.

  1. Major Feature:

In 2020, the major underwent a specialty adjustment, merging the previous majors of Materials Physics and New Energy Materials and Devices into the major of Materials Science and Engineering. Thereafter, the major offers three research directions: Ultra-High Temperature Materials and Equipment, Optoelectronic Materials and Devices, and Energy Materials and Devices.

  1. Faculty:

The Major of Materials Science and Engineering currently has 67 full-time faculty members, with 22 professors and 19 associate professors, including one academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, one national high-level overseas expert, three recipients of the National Talents Program, one winner of the first prize of the National Award for Technological Invention and one member of the Ministry of Education's training program for the Leading Figure for the New Century. And many academic and teaching honors in Jiangxi Province, including 21 recipients of different types of Jiangxi Provincial Talents Programs, four provincial young scientists, two provincial outstanding teachers, six provincial young and middle-aged backbone teachers, etc.

  1. Achievements in Talent Cultivation:

Over the past five years, our students have won more than 200 awards in various national college student competitions, including three gold medals and three silver medals in the 7th China International College Students "Internet+" Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition.
