Introduction to Physics Major

1. History of physics major. The major of physics was founded in 1958 and approved as the master degree authorization point of theoretical physics in 1996. Since then, it has successively obtained two first-level disciplines of physics and optical engineering and second-level disciplines of astrophysics. In 2010, physics was approved as the "Twelfth Five-Year" high-level discipline of Jiangxi Province. In 2017 and 2021, physics won the first place for two consecutive times in the comprehensive evaluation of undergraduate majors of universities and colleges in Jiangxi Province. In 2018, it was rated as the only advantageous major in physics among first-class professional construction projects in Jiangxi Province, approved as the national first-class professional construction point (Central circuit) in 2020, approved as the doctoral degree authorization point of first-level physics discipline and the master degree authorization point of first-level astronomy discipline in 2021, and awarded as the five-star major in Jiangxi Province in 2022.

2. Faculty of physics major. There are currently 97 full-time faculty members in the physics department, including 35 professors, 22 associate professors, 20 doctoral supervisors, and 31 master’s supervisors. Among them, 37 have overseas study experience. Additionally, the department has 1 distinguished professor under the “Changjiang Scholars Award Program”, 1 winner of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, 1 winner of the National Excellent Youth Fund, 2 participants in the Ministry of Education’s New Century Excellent Talents Program, 3 leading academic and technical figures in major disciplines in Jiangxi Province, 4 talents under Jiangxi Province’s “Ganpo Talent 555 Project”, 3 people in Jiangxi Province’s “Young Scientists” category (outstanding youth), 1 teaching master in Jiangxi Province, 7 individuals selected for Jiangxi Province’s Talent Project of Hundred, Thousand, and Ten Thousand Talents, 14 leading figures in disciplines in Jiangxi Province’s universities, and 9 young backbone teachers in Jiangxi Province.

3. Teaching and research platform. Physics major has 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center: Physics Experimental Teaching Center; 1 Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education: Spatial information intelligent perception technology; 3 Key Laboratories of Jiangxi Province: Jiangxi Key Laboratory of Microscale Crossover Science, Jiangxi Key Laboratory of Geospatial Information, and Jiangxi Key Laboratory of Fusion Energy and Information Control; 1 Engineering Research Center in Jiangxi Province: Radar and Information technology; 1 Jiangxi Province Collaborative Innovation Center: Near-Earth Space Environment and Information Collaborative Innovation Center; 1 High-level Laboratory of Jiangxi Province: High-level Key Laboratory of Space Science and Technology. At present, it has four stable main disciplines: plasma physics, optics, condensed matter physics and theoretical physics. There are 7 research teams: Terahertz physics and devices, Low dimensional physics and devices, Nanophotonics and quantum optics, Plasma physics, Theoretical astrophysics, Quantum statistical physics, Space physics and detection technology Research team.

4. Major’s directions, training mode and characteristics. There are 2 majors in physics: (1) Physics; (2) Applied physics (including the direction in applied electronics, microelectronics, and photoelectronics).

The major of Physics aims to cultivate innovative talents who can engage in scientific research, teaching, physical technology engineering management and other aspects in physics and similar disciplines. Students of this major should have a solid mathematical foundation, master solid systematic basic theoretical knowledge of physics and basic experimental methods, and have certain basic scientific research ability and innovative application development ability, and understand the cutting-edge theories and developments of physics.

The major of Applied physics aims to cultivate professional technicians and researchers in the fields of applied electronics, microelectronics and optoelectronics. The students of this major are able to combine the basic principles of physics with practical applications, and have the consciousness of independent learning and lifelong learning to adapt to the constantly developing needs of society.

Training methods and characteristics:

(1) Relying on the provincial key laboratories and research teams, and the national physics experiment teaching demonstration center, the four integration" of classroom teaching, discipline competition, scientific research innovation, and graduation design is implemented to cultivate students’ innovation ability;

(2) Practical teaching is consistently incorporated throughout the entire undergraduate education process, with relying on pillar enterprises in Nanchang Optics Valley and carrying out technical summer camp activities to solidify practical capabilities.

(3) A total of 8 national and provincial-level teaching achievement awards have been received, 34 national-level virtual simulation experiment projects and provincial-level educational reform projects have been approved, and 25 national-level planned textbooks and professional textbooks have been published.

This major has trained outstanding scientific and technological talents such as Li Huawang, chief designer of dark matter particle detection satellite, and outstanding independent entrepreneurs such as Yang Yigen, president of Hanyi Electronics, leading the training of physics professionals in universities in Jiangxi.
